Periodontal disease affects millions of people in the United States each year. The most common treatment for the condition is root planing and scaling, a procedure that involves cleaning below the gum line. After the procedure, patients undergo a round of antibiotics. In some cases, the deep cleaning needs to be repeated every three months to ensure that pockets in the gums do not lead to bone loss.
Unfortunately, almost half of those people who follow this maintenance schedule continue to have periodontal disease. Perio Protect was developed to improve the outcomes of periodontitis treatments. Dr. Ari Moskowitz of Baltimore Periodontics offers Perio Protect to his Baltimore and Catsonville patients.
What is Perio Protect®?
Perio Protect® is an at-home treatment that complements the intensive cleanings that you receive at our office. The medications that are used with a Perio Tray® penetrate the gum line to help fight bacteria.
What is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an oral health condition in which you have an infection around the base of your teeth that is caused by bacteria. Left untreated, the bacteria continue to grow below the gum line and eventually leads to bone loss. Periodontal disease is very difficult to treat with brushing and flossing; therefore, the best option is periodic deep cleanings by your dentist.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Perio Protect Gum Treatment?
Anyone who has periodontal disease or has been treated for periodontal disease makes for a good candidate for this treatment. Dr. Moskowtiz looks for patients who follow rigorous and excellent oral healthcare routines. Patients who do not take care of their teeth or gums properly (brush, floss, etc) may not be considered for this treatment. To find out if you are candidate for Baltimore or Catsonville periodontal treatment, contact our office today to schedule a consultation.
Benefits of Periodontal Trays
- Comfortable fit that is similar to wearing a mouth guard
- Less invasive that alternative medication delivery options
- May reduce the need for antibiotics
- Easy to use at home
- Requires no special techniques
How Does Perio Protect® Work?
Perio Protect® works by delivering a consistent amount of bacteria-fighting medication to your gums. The tray seals against your gums so that the medication is pushed into the pockets of your gum line.
How Do I Use the Perio Tray?
The Perio Tray® is custom-made to fit your mouth. You use the tray two to three times each day, adding a small amount of the gel medication at specific points in the tray. After 10 to 15 minutes, you remove the tray. Once your infection is managed, you continue to use the tray one tie each day. Your dentist will let you know when you can reduce the usage of your Perio Tray®.
Is Perio Protect an Alternative to Gum Surgery?
Period Protect is not always an alternative for traditional surgery for gum disease. In many cases, Perio Protect can reduce the need for surgery. However, in some cases, surgery is unavoidable. Rather than being seen as an alternative for gum surgery, Perio Protect is a trusted follow-up to surgery to prevent diseases from recurring. This treatment is only as effective as the patient is active with their home care. Dr. Moskowitz will provide an examination of your gums to determine which treatment option is best for you.
