As a serious medical condition that causes excessive snoring and even heart failure, sleep apnea causes patients to continuously wake up during the night— leaving them almost never fully rested. What Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a serious medical problem that causes one or more pauses in breathing while you sleep. Lasting anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, these pauses in breathing can occur more than 30 times per hour in some patients. Because your body isn’t getting the proper oxygen it needs while you’re sleeping, it disrupts sleep and can cause heart failure or even stroke if left untreated.
What Are Causes of Sleep Apnea?
If you were to ask around, you might be surprised to learn that more people than you knew of have sleep apnea. Common causes include:
- Excessive Weight: If you are overweight, it puts you at a greater risk of developing sleep apnea. This is because of the extra weight that is placed on your lungs, upper airways, and chest. Luckily, by losing excess weight, you can simultaneously combat sleep apnea.
- Family History: If you grew up in a household full of snoring parents who may have had sleep apnea, you are more likely to get it. Genetically linked, this disorder can sometimes be unavoidable.
- Nasal Obstructions: Individuals with nasal obstructions tend to develop the sleep disorder due to the breathing restrictions.
- Smoking: Smoking isn’t just bad for your lungs and overall health— it can also contribute to sleep apnea.
