The Importance of Detecting Gum Disease Early On
- Posted on: Jul 15 2018
Here at Baltimore Periodontics, we perform a variety of both surgical and non-invasive techniques to help patients get rid of their gum disease and restore their oral health. And although all of these treatments are really effective, nothing is better at helping with gum disease as preventing it from the get-go. So, how can you keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible? Let’s take a closer look at a few tips.
Get Regular Cleanings
The number one cause of gum disease is a buildup of tartar along the gum line which can lead to an infection. Tartar is caused when your plaque hardens and sits on the teeth for too long, and one of the best ways to get rid of plaque and tartar is with a thorough dental cleaning. Remember that the American Dental Association recommends that patients get a dental cleaning every six months so if you haven’t schedule yours, now is the time.
Did you know that people who use tobacco (even vaping) are at a higher risk of developing gum disease— not to mention, tobacco users are also at an increased risk of developing other oral issues like oral cancer, tooth loss, and tooth decay. If you are a regular tobacco user, preventing gum disease is just another reason to quit using.
As previously mentioned, the leading cause of gum disease is a buildup of plaque and tartar along the gumline, and the best way to get rid of it is with regular tooth brushing. Make sure that you are brushing your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
