The Basics of Gum Recession
- Posted on: Feb 15 2019
Unless you were sleeping under a rock during 2008, you probably remember just how devastating the recession was on our economy. Another type of recession that may be equally as devastating is an oral condition called gum recession.
What Is Gum Recession?
Gum recession is an oral condition that causes your gum tissue to weaken, loosen, and pull away from the tooth or teeth. When this occurs, it causes bacteria to get underneath the gums which can cause them to become extremely irritated, infected, and swollen.
What Is the Cause of Gum Recession?
Typically, gum recession is caused by periodontal disease, but it can also be caused by too much pressure on your gums when brushing.
How Can It Be Treated?
Depending on the severity of your gum recession, we may recommend that you get a procedure done called the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST). During this procedure, Dr. Moskowitz will make a small hole in the gum tissue and then use a special instrument to loosen healthy gum tissue. This process is relatively simple and non -invasive which means that patients, like you, won’t have to worry about undergoing a big oral surgery.
How Can I Avoid Gum Recession?
If you don’t currently have gum recession and don’t want that diagnosis anytime soon, there are several things that you can do including:
- Getting regular dental cleanings
- Using a soft bristled toothbrush
- Using a fluoride toothpaste
- Flossing everyday
