3 Simple Ways to Fight Gum Disease

Gum Disease, Catonsville, MD

Gum disease is one of the things that we see patients the most for. As a condition that causes your gums to become red, inflamed, and tender, gum diseases is fairly easy to treat and prevent; as long as you catch it in the early stages. To help you avoid gum disease altogether, we have created a list of three things that you can do.

Brush Regularly

Brushing your teeth is your number one defense not just against cavities but against gum disease as well. When you are brushing, make sure that you brush as close to your gums as possible so that tartar doesn’t build up along your gum line. To help soften your toothbrush so that it doesn’t feel too harsh against your gums, try to run it under hot water; that will help loosen up the bristles a bit.

Quit Tobacco

Tobacco products are hard on all parts of your body; especially your mouth. When you smoke cigarettes, it slows down your salivary glands which means that you won’t have enough saliva to protect your teeth from plaque and tartar. The result? Problems like gum disease. To help you avoid gum disease, oral cancer, tooth loss, and other oral concerns, make sure that you quit smoking as soon as possible.

Get Regular Cleanings

Regular dental cleanings aren’t just the perfect opportunity for us to see your shining face— even though we do love that. The American Dental Association recommends that patients get a dental cleaning done every six months to help cut down on plaque and tartar build-up across your gum line and around your teeth. By removing this build up, we can take a closer look at your gums to make sure the’re not infected and also cut down on the likelihood that you’ll get gum disease to begin with.

Having the perfect smile starts with your teeth and ends with your gums. To make sure that your teeth and gums stay healthy, contact us at our Catonsville office today and call us at  410.744.6088
