How to care for dental implants

Making the decision to restore the smile after tooth loss with dental implants is a smart one. Dental implants are growing in popularity as patients learn more about how they work and the benefits they provide. With dental implants, patients can replace one or more teeth in the smile on a long-term basis with a solution that functions and looks just like the natural smile. At Baltimore Periodontics, Lasers, and Dental Implants, Dr. Ari Moskowitz encourages education on not only placing dental implants, but how to care for them as well.

What are dental implants?

Dr. Ari Moskowitz describes the dental implant as a tooth root replacement for one or more teeth. These restorations are made of titanium, a metal that is biocompatible with the body and used for many types of implants throughout medicine. The posts are placed during oral surgery into the jawbone which acts as the foundation for the implant. Then, the post is restored with a crown, bridge, or denture to achieve the finished results.

How to care for dental implants

When patients have a dental implant (or several dental implants) placed, they are educated by our team of professionals on how to care for them. Below are a few recommendations given by Dr. Ari Moskowitz regarding the care and attention these restorations will require:

  • Brush and floss the teeth—and the dental implant—after every meal
  • Keep the smile healthy, avoiding periodontal disease which can cause bone loss—and implant loss
  • Use waterpiks or other instruments at home to effectively remove any food particles that may become stuck or impacted around the implant
  • Visit the dentist regularly for evaluations and monitoring of the bone and gum health around the implant
  • Contact the dentist as soon as any problems arise, especially during the healing process following placement
